London, 1817. It is a time of upheaval, though not for reasons of war or politics. Magic, which once was the domain solely of two men, has now spread out to man, woman, and child alike. The government grapples with how to rework a nation's laws to fit these new circumstances as the multiple new magicians in England explore their awakened gifts and talents.
The Starre Inn
This tavern, inn, and meeting hall has become the de facto site for the rebirth of English magic. Various magicians gather inside its walls to talk theory and debate the nuances of Strange and Norrell's position on English magic, but mostly to eat, drink, and spend time with other magicians. As such, this is where most members of the Learned Society of York Magicians can be found. If you want to debate with your fellow magicians or simply talk magic, The Starre Inn is the place to be.
Gardens & Public Areas
Be careful when taking a stroll through a park or commons—they've become favorite spaces for budding magicians to practice their craft. One might see a spell running wild, a tree uprooting itself, or animals behaving quite oddly. Or maybe you're the one practicing a spell and you have to explain why you summoned a group of mermaids in the Thames. Thankfully, the practice of magic has kept away from some of the more crowded areas. Feel free to enjoy the lamplit walkways, music performances, or fountains of Vauxhall Gardens without running into any errant magicians!
Gentleman's Clubs
Despite the name, these clubs are much more egalitarian in the dream: members of all sexes are invited in. Feel free to chat with your friends and gossip while you play a game of billiards. Did you know that Lady Pole plans to go to the continent? Without her husband! How scandalous!
Obligatory Party Option
Miss Goldstone has decided to host a gala! Everybody who's everybody is there: her house is full of a crowded mass of people, all chatting, enjoying the company, and partaking in light refreshments and all the latest gossip. Obviously there is dancing all throughout the night. Though for most, the simple act of conversation and seeing just to be seen is enough. If you're lucky, you might be able to find a side room where one can catch a breath of fresh air or find a book to read. But for most, the focus is on enjoying the crowds of people that come with any London party.
Odd Magical Sightings
The problem with the creation of new magicians is that they have to be taught. And some have subscribed to the Jonathan Strange school of magic, best summed up as 'how about I do it anyway and worry about the consequences later.' As such, there is a wide variety of magical sightings and inconveniences people can run into on the streets of London. Feel free to make up your own, but here are a few for inspiration. They can last as long or as short as you want.
1. A flock of twenty or so ravens has suddenly decided to land at your feet, looking up at you with expectant eyes.
2. You hear a bell ringing in the distance and the faint sound of laughter. And yet, you cannot place where it comes from.
3. A statue has come to life and is stalling you by detailing the history of its creation.
4. As you pass by a shop window, you don't see your reflection in the glass. Instead, you see a staircase leading to a gray, desolate world.
5. Usually, street magicians are charlatans who try to fleece you from your coin and dazzle you with sleight of hand tricks. This one has just told you something absolutely confusing about your future. It's probably bogus, but you aren't so sure.
6. People didn't always have a candle in their head, did they? But you can see them now, each one burning intensely to match a person's inner spirit.
