Open Log: Big Blue Wet Thing

Terrors waking that morning will find a few things amiss with the ship: 1. it's hot and humid inside their cabins, and 2. the ship itself is rocking.  Swaying, in fact, as though the ice beneath them has melted and the ship is moving. Which it is, actually, and quite quickly too. 

The holes in the side of Terror have been repaired, the rigging put up on the masts, the dual wheels of the helm moving as the ship races through the waves on its own. Up above the sun is shining brightly. 
H.M.S. Terror is sailing once more, destination unknown.

He shakes his head. "I have no freaking clue," he admits. "I'm not much of a navigator unless I have a GPS, so this is brand new territory for me. South? I mean, it's hot, and I think we've all earned a tropical vacation at this point."

"Well, hopefully not too far south or we'll end up in the same mess we were before," he grins. "Ever been to the tropics, Shaun?"

He shakes his head. "My travel has been all within the US, and not out to Hawaii." He's been on planes before, but it's not an experience he enjoys, and he prefers to drive if he has to go anywhere. "What about you?"

Mulder hesitates. "Hey...you know Hawaii is in the US, right?" he asks. "Or are they not in your world?"

Shaun blinks. "Huh? Oh, yeah, it's part of the US, but you can't drive there, and air travel means putting your life in the hands of exhausted, overworked flight attendants with guns, which I try to avoid at all costs. I haven't flown since I was a kid."

Shaun's world was a mess. Mulder had been taking advantage of Shaun's offer to read what he could, but...there was a lot of information. It would take him years. "Anyone in close quarters with a gun can be dangerous," he tells him plainly. "Well, to answer your question, yes. I've been to Hawaii. I've been...almost everywhere. Part of the job."

"Agreed. You've probably figured out by now that most people in my world walk around armed, and that's mostly okay with me, but they take your guns when you fly, and it's possible I don't like not being in control." He grins. "So this wouldn't be your first time in the tropics, huh. Any advice? Other than obviously to wear sunscreen." Because duh.

"Don't get eaten," he laughs, picking up his drink and downing it quickly. "You'll be fine, I think."

"Ha," Shaun laughs. "Yeah, I'm pretty good at that. I feel reasonably confident in my ability, having been successful so far."

"It's one of those sink or swim things, huh? You are either successfully in avoiding it, or you're not, only once." He grins.

"Pretty much," he agrees. "You only get to be good at it if you start out that way or get really lucky. Not many second chances when something wants to eat your face. Got it, though. Wear sunscreen. Don't get eaten. Anything specifically hungry that I should be aware of? In the interest of being prepared." His tone is light, and he is joking, but also... Fortune favors the prepared.

"All depends on where we are. And if we have an influence on the dream. I hope not...because you and I both have a lot of monsters we could bring," he reminds him, almost-serious.

Shaun snorts. "Point," he agrees. "Let's hope that someone else populates the island, then. Our monsters can stay at home where they belong." Is Shaun thinking about the zombies or the human monsters? It's a mystery.

He reaches down to rub at his leg before taking another drink. "I think I've had all I can take today. Let's hope you're right, huh?"

He snickers. "I'm a journalist. I love being right. It's one of my favorite things. Take it easy, Mulder--try not to get too sunburned, okay?"
